This month: Hainan Gibbon
Illegal logging in the Hainan rainforest has destroyed so much of the gibbons’ home that they’ve been forced higher and higher into the treetops just to survive. With their forests shrinking, families get separated, food becomes harder to find, and safe places to live disappear.
In 2014 a landslide wiped out a 50-foot-wide stretch of forest, leaving a treeless gap that only some mature males could leap across. Females, and especially mothers carrying infants, couldn’t make the dangerous jump at all. Researchers eventually built a simple rope bridge with two parallel lines the gibbons could walk, swing, or hang from to safely cross the gully, though it took them nearly six months to trust it.
Today, there are fewer than 30 Hainan gibbons left on Earth, making them one of the rarest animals in the world and a powerful reminder of how important it is to protect the places wildlife depends on.
